Spokane Poetry Slam

Spokane Poetry Slam is competitive performance poetry at its Northwest finest! Every first and third Sunday, spoken word warriors battle for Inland Empire supremacy, and a $50 Grand Prize. Each poem is judged by five members of the audience and, after two rounds of poetry, whichever poet has the highest cumulative score is declared the winner! For more information about the rules, click here. Each May, Spokane Poetry Slam will hold our Finals, which will determine once and for all the top four Spokane poets of the year. These poets will be on the team that will represent the Lilac City at the National Poetry Slam, held each August. For more information on the rankings, click here. Both Spokane Poetry Slam and BootSlam are open to poets and poetry lovers of all ages. For either show, let it be clear: there is no censorship for content. Some poems may include harsh language, adult situations, and extremely beautiful imagery. Use your discretion on whether or not you want to bring Grandma. Spokane Poetry Slam was formerly held at two Empyrean locations in downtown Spokane. In 2011, when the Empyrean closed for good, the slam went on hiatus for over a year. In May, 2012, the slam was reborn with Isaac Grambo at the helm. The event was held at Scout Tavern until May of 2012, when Scout closed and the Slam moved (after a couple months) to The Lantern Tavern in the South Perry area. In April 2014, Spokane Poetry Slam returned downtown to its current home at The Bartlett. In April 2013, Spokane Poetry Slam expanded to a second monthly event with BootSlam, held at Boots Bakery and Lounge. It is the poets and the audience that make a slam what it is, so come on out and read, perform, watch, or cheer. Heck, if you’re present, you’re required to cheer! Spokane is great, and spoken word makes it that much better!
